Redeveloped Urban Scenery

Maybe it was a mere coincidence that I got to take a look at Inwang-Jaesaekdo (Note: an 18C painting of Inwang Mountain by Kyum Jae, a 17-18C Korean painter) at the top of the hill behind Ahyeon-dong. Deep black ink cleans of itself from this end to that end, and a piece of art of realistic scenery comes back to life. Inwang Mountain sits still, embroidered with silk by black ink at the tip of Kyum-Jaes brush. The mountains remain unchanged as time passes by, but the cloud and mist at the foot of the mountains are gone to reveal high-rise buildings and apartments.
The work of recording our contemporary scenery with oriental ink is to encounter some painter from several centuries ago and to look in to the past within today. And it is also to talk to those who share today which is here and now and wait for those to come.
If the ancestors painted landscapes with the subject of nature, I am doing the work of keeping the city scenery where we live in with the subject of the redeveloped urban scenery. It is not just the exterior that goes away with the redevelopment. Low roofs leaning against each other, dogs and children playing in the alley below those roofs, neighbors gone out to work at the break of the dawn and coming back after sunset, and the warm streetlights standing, looking out for the street and shedding light on people……where would all the people made their living below the roofs of sky for such a long time scatter and gather again.
Not long after, the village with the studio will be torn down and a new town will occupy its place. The apartment building the studio is located at, which is the oldest apartment building in Korea (Choongjung Apartment), will be gone. This apartment has outlived Japanese colonization period and the Korean War and retains the traces of time up until now. Now that it shall be gone, it would not be just me that would like to record it at least with photographs, accounting all those people coming to take a shot. Watching people leaving and looking at the buildings with demolition signs, it makes me wonder if all that destruction can be justified under the mere name of redevelopment. I intend to record and communicate the redeveloped urban scenery through the pieces at this exhibition.
In this work, Bamseom of Hangang appears as another subject. In harmony with the scenery of 63 Building, the National Assembly Building, or riverside apartments, Bamseom itself is quite inspiring. In a late movie, it was portrayed as a desert island with a castaway from the city. In reality, Bamseom is an island isolated within Hangang, designated as an ecological preservation zone in 1999 with limited civilian entry. Bamseom, however, one of the eight Mapo sceneries, has been called a small Haekeumkang (Note: one of the most famous maritime scenery in Korea located off the shore of Geoje Island) and was once inhabited by 62 families 443 people through 17 generations. In February of 1968, however, it was demolished through explosion to become what it is now. It was to supply the stone materials needed by the bank revetment construction of Yeouido
It has been forty years since the gain of Yeouido and the loss of Bamseom. Now Bamseom could never be what it used to be no matter how much money or effort is put in. I take a guess on what Bamseom would have been like if it retained its past. How does that sound? With just a little bit different thought, does not Bamseom, isolated under Seokang Bridge, look like a lonely buoy warning for the danger level of infinite development.

I would like to talk about ourselves blocked behind the never-stopping bulldozer with the urban scenery on canvas. From the scene of a classical scholar boating with a barrel of drink with the high-rise apartments in the background, I hope we can have a presence of mind to think about the mental value over material value or reflect on ourselves in the repeatedly redeveloped or to-be-redeveloped urban scenery. In the world where material prosperity is the standard of life, I hope we can take a view of today through simple, country-side, and unworldly values of our nature and tradition.
