​Revisited memories At last

​A fire broke out at father’s workspace.

All those years disappeared with black ashes and the framework which had been invisible was unintentionally revealed. Experience of facing the original form of a place I had seen all the time was confusion itself. It was as if I was faced with the naked of an object hidden that I had been familiar with but memories I had forgotten for long and I had intended to forget were exposed, which forced me to face an unintended circumstance. Things exposed naked without any cover were very much uncomfortable and strange.

With memories buried down there exposed unintentionally on a situation, we sometimes experience of forgotten memories brought back all of a sudden. It would either recall a good memory to leave the current harsh reality behind for a while or make us to face sufferings by abruptly exposing memories of experiences hidden.

When a certain object or circumstance suddenly opens such memories, we are overwhelmed with anxiety or drawn into imaginary space.

Experience that avoided or hidden things are revealed is painful and miserable at times. We are sometimes disappointed at the very substance that we have ignored or sighingly hope it would be nice if we did not recognize it.

Otherwise, we realize that things I’ve known for are not the truth and panic with complete transformation of thinking. It is like we experience the way Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy would feel in the ‘Pride and Prejudice’ who used to regarded each other as arrogant ones but that judgment was simply in line with others’ eyes, which was not the true character of the two.

Experience of hidden memories revealed gives us confusion, discomfort, another imagination or realization. Memories that we have avoided or intended to forget even though they have been out there all the time are recalled through experience of touch, smell, sound and space at a certain situation and it makes us face our own time and circumstance as it is.

Places and situations ordinary to someone could recall memories of a great shock and fear or of a happy circumstance to others.

We finally come to see the original form and our true self through memories revisited.

It would sometimes bring us bitterness or pain but it rather makes us face the reality and truly free us from circumstances blocked up.

마침내 드러난 기억(Revisited memories At last)
아버지의 작업장에 불이 났다.

그 동안의 세월과 시간은 까만 재로 사라지며 보이지 않았던 원래의 골조가 의도치 않게 고스란히 드러나게 되었다. 늘 마주하던 장소 본래의 모습을 직면하는 그 순간의 경험은 당황스러움 그 자체였다. 마치 감춰져 있던 본래 사물의 민낯과 마주하듯 알고는 있으나 잊고 있었던, 잊고자 했던 기억이 드러나며 의도치 않은 상황에 직면하게 하였다. 피할 곳이 없이 드러난 맨 얼굴의 그것들은 몹시도 불편하고 낯선 것들이었다.

저 밑에 묻혀있던 기억이 어떤 상황에 의해 의도치 않게 드러나며 불현 듯 잊었던 기억이 떠오르는 경험을 할 때가 있다. 그것은 현재의 괴로운 상황과 대치되는 좋았던 기억을 소환하며 잠시 현실을 잊게 만들기도 하고, 감춰진 경험의 기억들을 돌연 드러내며 괴로움에 직면하게 한다.

어떤 대상과 상황이 갑자기 그런 기억들을 들춰내면 우리는 불안감에 휩싸이기도 하고 상상의 공간에 빨려 들어가기도 한다.

피하고 있던 일들과 감춰진 것들이 드러나는 경험은 때로는 매우 아프고 쓰리다. 그냥 넘어갔던 일의 본 모습을 알며 실망을 하게도 되고 차라리 몰랐었다면 좋았을 거라는 탄식을 하게 하기도 한다.

또는 내가 그렇게 원래 알았던 것이 사실이 아니었음을 깨닫게 되는 경험을 하며 완전한 생각의 탈바꿈을 경험하고 당황하기도 한다. ‘오만과 편견’ 처럼 내가 원래 알던, 오만했다고 느꼈던 그 대상자에 대한 평가는 사실 사람들의 시선에 맞춰진 의견이 포장해 버린 형태였을 뿐 그 사람의 본 모습은 아니었다는 것을 깨닫게 되는 순간의 주인공과 같은 느낌의 경험을 하는 것이다.

감춰진 기억들이 드러나는 경험은 당혹감을, 또는 불쾌감을, 또 다른 상상을, 깨달음을 느끼게 한다. 촉감, 냄새, 소리, 공간의 어떤 상황 경험을 통해 원래 있었지만 피하고 있었던, 혹은 잊고 있었던, 또는 잊고자 했던 기억들이 소환되며 나만의 시간과 상황에 오롯이 대면하게 된다.

누군가에게는 그냥 평범한 장소와 상황들이 또 다른 누군가에게는 큰 충격과 공포의 기억을 소환시키기도 하고 행복했던 상황을 떠올리게 하기도 한다.

우리는 마침내 드러난 기억들을 통해 본래 그것의 모습, 그리고 나의 민낯을 발견하게 된다. 그것은 씁쓸함과 고통을 때로는 유발하기도 하지만 이는 오히려 현실을 직면하게 하고 나아가지 못하고 있던 상황에서의 진정한 해방을 가져다준다.
