최후의 묵시록(默示錄)과도 같은 마지막 생존자들을 그리는 작가는 인류가 수백만 년에 걸쳐서 생성되어온 고유한 생명체의 형태들을 파괴하고 있으며, 스스로의 이익을 위해 서식지 파괴, 환경오염, 동물 실험, 트로피 사냥 등 동물의 멸종을 초래하고 있다는 점에 주목한다.
더 나아가 결국 인간의 반성과 실천만이 그들을 위기에서 구할 수 있다는 신념 하에 인간의 폭력성과 끝없는 욕심을 비판하고, 들추어내려 한다.
